Great horned owls have a varied habitat and are usually found in woodlands or open areas interspersed with woods. They have a broad range of habitats that includes deciduous forests, swamps, deserts, the edges of tundra, tropical rain forests as well as city suburbs, orchards or parks.
The great horned owl is highly adaptable and is found year-round in parts of the United States, Canada and northern coastal areas. They also inhabit many parts of South America. They are mainly nocturnal but have been known to be active in late afternoon or before dawn in some areas. They are efficient predators and feed on small mammals, such as skunks, as well as birds and nestlings.
