During a hysterectomy, the uterus is removed by cutting the inside of the vagina and detaching the uterus from the other pelvic organs, according to Mayo Clinic. The doctor pulls the uterus out through the vagina and stitches the surgical wound.
Different types of hysterectomies, from supracervical to radical hysterectomies, are performed depending on what organs and tissues need to be removed along with the uterus, states Cleveland Clinic. Hysterectomies can be done through the vagina or the stomach, but vaginal hysterectomies require less in-patient time, asserts Mayo Clinic. Without the uterus, the patient can no longer menstruate or conceive. Hysterectomies can be performed to treat fibroids and endometriosis as well as cervical cancer.
