Both of Valerie Jarrett's parents are citizens of the United States, from the cities of Washington and Chicago. The couple lived in Iran for a six-year period during the late 1950s and early 1960s, during which time their daughter was born. Valerie Jarrett and her parents moved back to the United States in 1962, when Valerie was five years old.
