The TreasuryDirect website offers a calculator to determine the current value of any savings bond. The type of bond, whether E, EE, H or I, the denomination and the issue date are required for an accurate valuation.

All bonds issued by the U.S. Treasury reach final maturity in 40 years or less, according to TreasuryDirect. After final maturity, the bonds don't accumulate any more interest. A Series E bond from 1948 stopped growing in value in 1988. Regulations concerning savings bonds require bond owners to report all taxable interest as income in the year of final maturity even if the bond is not redeemed, so a 1948 bond may have no further income tax consequences on redemption.
