Venus flytraps live in acid-rich soils mixed with drainage materials and are mostly restricted to specific regions of North Carolina and South Carolina. They can be cultivated at home in a substrate consisting of 65 percent sphagnum moss and 35 percent sand.
This plant grows in a few counties of North Carolina, such as Bladen, Carteret, Craven and Duplin, and in the Georgetown and Horry counties of South Carolina. Venus flytraps grow naturally at Carolina Beach State Park south of Wilmington, N.C. The Venus flytrap was introduced into Florida by horticulturists. These plants thrive in humid air and moist soil, but they do not do well in standing water.
