The Veterans of Foreign Wars, or VFW, does provide flag disposal services, and its posts use a ceremony for retiring the flag in a respectful manner, notes the Veterans of Foreign War of The Woodlands, Texas. Fire is used to dispose of, or retire, flags that are damaged beyond repair and can't be displayed.

When disposing of flags, VFW posts fold the flag before it is put in the fire. The ceremony usually includes customs like a moment of silence and a final salute. The VFW post will bury the ashes after the burning process completes.

Some other organizations offering flag disposal services include the Marine Corps League, the Boy Scouts, American Legion and the Girl Scouts, notes USAFlagSupply.com.
