Does vitamin E help scars?

Despite some anecdotal evidence, Healthline reports no scientific proof shows that vitamin E is helpful in treating or removing scars. Research is ongoing and inconclusive as of 2014. Instead, cortisone and skin creams with certain vitamins may help lighten the visible effects of scarring, according to WebMD.
Cortisone helps mitigate the redness and swelling that is common in scars, according to WebMD. After reducing inflammation, lightening creams help with the cosmetic appearance. Kojic acid, arbutin and vitamin C are noted as effective ingredients in skin creams. If creams don't help, people can see a dermatologist to discuss laser skin resurfacing and other more advanced treatment options.
