What is a voter registration list?

A voter registration list is a list of eligible voters in an area. Voter registration rules vary by state, but most individuals who are U.S. citizens over the age of 18 are eligible to register to vote. Incarcerated people and parolees are not eligible.
In 47 states, it is not necessary to register to vote in person. A form can be downloaded from the Internet, completed, and mailed to the appropriate voter registration location. In about 40 percent of states, it is possible to register to vote online. Virtually all states have a deadline on which voter registration closes before an election.
