What does a waterbug look like?

Waterbugs are long, flat, oval-shaped insects with six legs, including two smaller front legs that they use to catch and hold prey. While there are several different bugs that can be considered water bugs, the one with the common name of waterbug has a scientific name of lethocerus sp.

Though waterbugs are aquatic insects, they have wings, and adult waterbugs are effective flyers. These wings are in multiple parts, including leathery front wings and outer wings that are more delicate and veiny. These bugs reproduce through a process in which the female deposits eggs onto the male's back. The male will then sweep water over the eggs to assist with hatching.
