Bed bugs, or cimex lectularius L., are small, brown insects that are about 3/16 to 1/4 of an inch long. They have flat bodies that are oval in shape if they have not eaten recently, and longer, rounder, more reddish bodies after they have fed.
Immature bed bugs, or nymphs, are not as large, and are transparent of yellowish-white. They can be hard to see if they have not fed. Bed bug eggs are white and about the size of the head of a pin.
Bed bugs have a particular smell, which is musty and sweet. This odor comes from glands on their undersides.
