What is the best way to handle an out-of-warranty, broken appliance?

Federal law requires that any refrigerant be removed before disposal of the appliance, says the Environmental Protection Agency. Oil and universal waste must also be properly managed and stored.

If the appliance is a refrigerator, the door should be tied shut before disposal to prevent injury.

Laws regarding the disposal of large appliances vary by municipality. Some municipalities have fee-based, curb-side pickup. In other cases, utility companies contract with third parties to pick up appliances, and they may offer rebates on upgrades to more energy-efficient models. Retailers often offer to pick up and dispose properly of old appliances when delivering new ones.
