To remove soot stains from upholstery or carpet, sprinkle cornstarch or baking soda on the stain, leave it on for an hour, and then vacuum it away. Apply dry-cleaning solvent to a clean white cloth, and sponge away the stain. Blot to absorb the solvent, and then repeat the process until the stain is gone.
