What do you wear to a viewing?

The dress code for a viewing is comfortable semi-formal attire. This means dresses or pantsuits for women and a suit and tie for the men. Viewing and funeral attire are often worn in dark or neutral colors such as black, dark blue or gray.

Today, personalized funerals and viewings, sometimes called wakes, are becoming more common. During these events, the family of the deceased may dictate the appropriate attire. Families may often choose to dress more casually, but the attire should still show respect for the deceased and his or her family.

When in doubt, it is always best to check with the family of the deceased. Children should dress in a similar fashion to their parents.
