What is the weighted average function in Excel used for?

The weighted average function in Excel calculates the average of a group of numbers with one or more of the numbers given more weight or a higher level of importance. For example, when averaging grades together, a teacher may give more weight to a test versus a worksheet assignment.
In Excel, the SUMPRODUCT function calculates weighted averages by multiplying the numbers by the specified weight, adds the total and divides by the number of assignments. For example, if a test is 40 percent of a grade but three homework assignments make up 20 percent each of the final grade, the SUMPRODUCT function calculates the weight of each.
