"Oh, Happy Day," “Jesus is My Rock,” “So Satisfied,” “For Every Mountain,” and “Safe in His Arms,” are some of the most popular black gospel songs. The general topics of these songs are the feelings of gratitude and safety that believers draw from their faith.

The roots of black gospel music reach to the period of slavery. Many spirituals composed in the 18th or 19th century have lyrics and musical elements similar to modern gospel hymns.

The famous "Oh, Happy Day" gospel hymn is an adaptation of an old hymn, which was written by an Englishman Philip Doddridge in the 18th century. The Grammy Award winning gospel version is the work of Edwin Hawkins.
