The Welsh mountain pony originated in the mountains of Wales. The pony is known for having above average intelligence, a positive attitude, sturdy limbs and an excitable gait.

The Welsh mountain pony is part of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society, which also includes the Welsh pony, Welsh cob and Welsh pony of cob. These breeds are used for pleasure riding, trails, trekking, jumping, driving and showing. The Welsh mountain pony's head is small, with pointed ears and big eyes. The Welsh mountain pony is also found in areas such as Africa, Sweden, Australia and Canada. It has had a role in the breeding of American horses as well.
