The sloppy joe sandwich is an original American creation that was named after a cook named Joe at Floyd Angell's cafe in Sioux City, Iowa. The sloppy joe was a variation on a loose meat sandwich.
A loose meat sandwich is similar to a hamburger. The ground beef, however, is not formed into a patty as it is with a hamburger. Traditionally, the sandwich is made of lightly seasoned meat resting on a white bun and is dressed with mustard, minced onion and dill pickles.
According to legend, Joe created the original sloppy joe when he added tomato sauce to the loose meat sandwich.
Sloppy joe sandwiches are also known by other names, such as dynamites, sloppy jane's, slushburgers, wimpies and yum yums.
