In 2009, the average cost per gallon of gasoline in the United States was $2.41. The U.S. average went from $1.84 in January 2009 to $2.66 in December 2009.
After steadily rising from 1994 to 2008, gas prices dropped dramatically after the U.S. average reached a high of $4.11 in July 2008. It dropped to a low of $1.75 by December 2008 but rose throughout 2009, with the national average reaching a high of $2.71 in November 2009 before a slight decrease at the end of the year. Gas prices continued to rise in 2010, 2011 and 2012, before declining slightly in 2013 and 2014.
