According to the Food Network's Food Encyclopedia, white, bumpy beans are called garbanzo beans. They are also sometimes called chickpeas. They are typically off-white and marginally larger than a regular-sized pea. The legumes are firm and smooth to the touch and offer a warm, nut-like flavor.

In Italy, garbanzo beans are often known as ceci. Garbanzo beans are heavily featured in Mediterranean cuisine, but they are also popular in Spain, Mexico and the Southwestern United States. Some dishes that prominently feature garbanzo beans include Mexican dishes, Italian minestrone soup and other stews, Middle Eastern hummus and a variety of salads.
