Does the Wii play Blu-ray?

The Wii, Nintendo's gaming console, does not play Blu-ray discs. Not only is Blu-ray not supported, but the Wii also does not play DVDs or CDs.

Although the Nintendo Wii has an optical disc slot, the console uses a proprietary format called a Wii Optical Disc for game play. The console also does not support video or audio playback from SD cards, USB devices or other types of portable memory. However, the device offers a variety of streaming options from popular services such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube and Amazon Video for those users who choose to use the Wii as a media center device.
