Who was Willie Shoemaker?

Willie Shoemaker was a professional racehorse jockey. During his career he amassed 8,833 wins. Some of his most notable wins include the Kentucky Derby (1955, 1959, 1965,1986), Preakness Stakes (1963, 1967), Belmont Stakes (1957, 1959, 1962, 1967, 1975) and the Breeders' Cup Classic (1987).
After retiring in 1990, Shoemaker became a trainer. His success was limited compared to his jockeying career. He retired from being a trainer in 1997. Shoemaker was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1958. He was also featured in a portrait series by Andy Worhol in the 1970s. Shoemaker died in 2003 at the age of 72.
