Are there wolf spiders in Florida?

The Carolina wolf spider is found in the state of Florida. Considered the largest wolf spider in North America, this species can reach 19 to 35 millimeters in body length with an even longer leg span. This spider has a gray or brown body with a black underside.

The Carolina wolf spider looks threatening, but it is not aggressive. It tends to retreat when faced with any animal larger than itself and only bites when cornered. Its venom is not significantly dangerous to humans, and a bite from this spider is comparable to the pain of a bee or wasp sting. Carolina wolf spiders are more active at night, when they do most of their hunting.
