As of 2015, the University of Connecticut is the winningest program in NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament history, having earned a total of nine titles from the tournament's inception in 1982 through their win in 2014. The University of Tennessee also has a successful women's basketball team, having won eight titles between 1982 and 2014.
Louisiana Tech, which won the first-ever tournament, is another major force in women's college basketball with six Final Four appearances and two championship titles. Other women's college basketball teams, including Auburn, Notre Dame and Stanford, have made frequent appearances in the women's Final Four.
