As of 2015, the University of Connecticut is the winningest program in NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament history, having earned a total of nine titles from the tournament's inception in 1982 through their win in 2014. The University of Tennessee also has a successful women's basketball team, having won eight titles between 1982 and 2014.

Louisiana Tech, which won the first-ever tournament, is another major force in women's college basketball with six Final Four appearances and two championship titles.
