There was no clear victor of the Battle of the Somme. The battle was the main Allied attack on the Western Front in 1916, and it was intended to drain German resources and gain the Allies territory.
The battle took place between July 1 and Nov. 18, 1916, on both sides of the River Somme in France. More than 1 million men were wounded or killed, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history. On the first day of battle, the British lost 58,000 troops, one-third of whom were killed, setting a one-day record. The Franco-British offensive gained 12 kilometers of ground, and the offensive was called off due to poor weather in November.
