Why would a Honda not start after running out of gas?

When a vehicle runs out of gas, the fuel pump has a chance to burn out and fail, which will not allow it to start. Some symptoms of a burned-out fuel pump include trouble starting and issues with stalling.

The main function of the fuel pump is to siphon up gas from the tank and transport it into the cylinders. When the pump fails the car will not have any fuel to crank through the engine. The following instructions explain how to troubleshoot and replace a broken fuel pump.

1. Turn the key to the on position

Turn the key to the on position and listen to see if the fuel pump engages. If no sound is heard, inspect the fuel pump fuse and relay. If both are fine, proceed to the next step.

2. Disconnect the battery

Disconnect the negative battery cable to avoid any accidental shock.

3. Relieve the fuel pressure

Relieve the fuel pressure by removing the gas cap.

4. Remove the back seat

Unlike other makes, Honda vehicles have an access panel underneath their back seat. Remove the seat to access the panel.

5. Open the panel

Open the panel and disconnect the fuel lines that run into the pump. Loosen the mounting hardware for the pump and pull it from the gas tank. Replace the unit.

6. Reconnect the fuel lines

Reconnect the fuel lines, seal the access panel and put the rear seat back. Connect the battery and check the ignition.
