A "King of the Ring" match has wrestlers competing in a single-elimination tournament, with the ultimate winner being crowned King of the Ring. The concept was first used in the World Wrestling Federation and has continued to be associated with the WWE.
The WWE's standard format for the event has been to have 16 wrestlers compete. The early matches in the tournament are held on televised programs, with the later rounds held back-to-back at a pay per view event of the same name. The event was held annually from 1985 to 2002 with the exception of 1990 and 1992. It was also held in 2006, 2008 and 2010.
