The song "Personal Jesus" was written by Depeche Mode lead vocalist Martin Gore in 1989. The song appeared on the 1990 album "Violator," and it was a mainstay on the Billboard Hot 100.
Before the album was released, coinciding advertisements were placed in the personal section of newspapers; the ad read “Your own personal Jesus." The advertisement also included a phone number one could dial to hear the tune, according to Wikipedia. The song was inspired by the book "Elvis and Me," the 1985 biography of Priscilla Presley, the ex-wife of Elvis Presley, according to the song writer, Martin Gore.
