Yanmar was founded in Osaka, Japan, in 1912 by Magokichi Yamaoka. It was originally known as Yamaoka Engine Workshop. It is now a global holding company focused on heavy equipment manufacturing with offices and manufacturing facilities worldwide.
The official company name is Yanmar Co., Ltd. The Yanmar brand name was established and trademarked in 1921. It is based on the Yama from the founders name combined with a reference to the Yanma Dragonfly. The dragonfly is a symbol of a good harvest in Japan.
Yanmar is a top brand of agricultural, marine, construction and other equipment worldwide and is still headquartered in Osaka, Japan, as of 2015.
