The Declaration of Independence was adopted by Congress on July 4, 1776. A committee consisting of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingston had been appointed three weeks earlier, on June 11, to draft a declaration. This draft was presented to Congress on June 28.
The Declaration of Independence is a document ratified during the American Revolutionary War that announced the sovereignty of the 13 American colonies from the British Empire. It introduced a new nation, the United States of America, and explained the reasons for separation. Britain didn't recognize the new country's independence until the end of the war and the subsequent Treaty of Paris in 1783.
