The first vehicle to operate using a gas motor was the Benz Patent Motor Car, invented in 1886 by Carl Benz. Prior to this, several steam-operated automobiles were created around the world. The first of these that was able to carry passengers was Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot's steam wagon, invented in 1770.
Though steam-propelled vehicles had been in existence since at least 1672, the Benz Patent Motor Car was the first vehicle to run on a gasoline-powered internal combustion engine like most modern cars. In 1888, Benz' wife Bertha completed a trip of about 112 miles in the motor car, marking the first long-distance automobile trip in history.
