What year was the seat belt invented?

Edward J. Claghorn received the first U.S. patent for an automobile seat belt on Feb. 10, 1885. Claghorn received U.S. patent number 312,085 for a safety belt to be used in the tourism industry. Nils Bohlin invented the modern three-point seat belt, which was introduced by Volvo in 1959.

A three-point seat belt has a lap and shoulder strap with a total of three attachment points. A two-point seat belt is just a lap belt and has nothing to help secure the upper body.

The first child car seats were invented in 1921 after the introduction of the Ford Model T vehicle. The first car seats were simply sacks with drawstrings that attached to the back seat.
