Zinc nitrite is a salt of zinc obtained by adding sodium nitrite to zinc sulphate, using alcohol as a liquid medium. The molecular formula of zinc nitrite is Zn(NO2)2, and its molecular weight is 157.42 grams.
Zinc nitrite decomposes very quickly upon reacting with water, so it cannot be prepared by using water. It is a covalent molecule and has a double bond between an atom of oxygen and nitrogen. An aqueous solution of zinc nitrite can be prepared by using a zinc compound with any base and then carrying out electrolysis. The reaction that leads to the formation of zinc nitrite is called a double-decomposition reaction.
