Who are the Zuni people?

The Zuni people are descendents of the Ancient Puebloans, natives who lived in the desert Southwest of New Mexico, Arizona, Southern Colorado and Utah. As of 2015, modern-day Zuni people live south of Gallup, New Mexico and have a population of around 6,000.

The Zuni's tribal name is "A'shiwi," meaning "The Flesh." The Zuni Society is organized into 13 matrilineal clans. They are a religious people whose religious life focuses on spirit-beings called kachinas. They often farm using the three sisters technique, a companion planting method involving corn, bean and squash. Since the early 1800s, they have been known for crafting jewelry, beadwork, baskets, animal fetishes and pottery with turquoise and silver.
