One of the designers behind the first official flag was Francis Hopkinson, a New Jersey delegate to the Continental Congress who also helped design the Great Seal of the United States. Hopkinson designed a flag with the stars in the straight pattern that is current as of 2014, rather than the circular pattern attributed to Betsy Ross. Both the flag with the straight pattern and the flag with the circular pattern were based on a prior design that was flown for several years during the Revolutionary War and that featured the red and white stripes with the British flag in the upper left.

Five or six years following the death of his wife, Columbus began living with Beatriz EnrÃquez de Trasierra. She bore the explorer a second son, Fernando. Columbus began his first, and perhaps best known, voyage in 1492. King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabelle of Castille, were the patrons of this voyage, which was intended to find a shorter route to eastern Asia.
