The Karankawas were a nomadic people who moved between the mainland and the islands found off the Texas coast. Their main mode of transportation was the dugout canoe. Though these canoes couldn't handle the rough, deep waters of the ocean, they were big enough to transport a family and their belongings. They moved by foot on land, and once settled in a place erected wigwams that could be broken down and carried with them.\nThe Karankawas were both hunter-gatherers and fishermen, and much of their diet included shellfish, finfish and turtles.

Franklin comments further that the traits of a turkey exemplify America more than an eagle because the turkey is native to America and courageous; however, Franklin does not ever petition for the turkey to become the national bird.
