Agave nectar is a relatively safe sugar substitute for diabetics, according to Healthline, because it does not raise blood glucose levels. Its consistency and taste is similar to honey. However, it is made up of 90 percent fructose, which can interfere with the body's metabolism when consumed in large doses.
Agave nectar is considerably sweeter and higher in calories than sugar, so it is best to use a fraction of the amount that you would with other sweeteners, especially in recipes, recommends Healthline. A teaspoon of agave nectar is 20 calories and 5 grams of carbohydrates, whereas the same amount of sugar is 16 calories and 4 carbs.
