With what agency does someone register for a federal employer identification number?

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service assigns federal employer identification numbers to all businesses. Business owners apply online with all necessary information and instantly receive a nine-digit identifying number for all their future filings, according to IRS.gov.
If business owners prefer not to file for an EIN online, the IRS also accepts completed applications on Form SS-4 through fax or mail. However, these choices do not have the advantage of same-day service, explains the IRS. None of the methods for requesting an EIN require any filing fees. As of 2015, the IRS requires all businesses that submit tax documents to apply for an EIN, which identifies the business on submitted tax forms.
