Mayo Clinic defines an alcohol allergy as a genetic condition in which the body is unable to break down alcohol. An alcohol allergy is better labelled as an alcohol intolerance, according to Mayo Clinic.
Mayo Clinic notes that the symptoms of alcohol intolerance are nasal congestion, skin flushing, hives, worsening asthma, headache, low blood pressure, nausea and vomiting. Consult a doctor for a proper diagnosis of alcohol intolerance. Mayo Clinic advises avoiding or limiting alcohol intake to prevent the negative effects of alcohol intolerance. In a severe case of alcohol intolerance, a doctor may prescribe epinephrine to treat the reaction.
