Alligator snapping turtles eat a variety of food, including fish, minnows and snakes. They will even eat dead fish and other turtles if the opportunity knocks.
The alligator snapping turtle is a supersized freshwater turtle with a thick, rigid skull and a big head. It has three rows of spikes running down its shell, giving it the look of a stegosaurus. The alligator snapping turtle hides itself in the mud or behind tall plants until its food happens by. Its mouth is camouflaged, and its tongue looks like a worm, so it lies motionless in wait until a fish or other prey mistakes its tongue for a snack — at which time it goes in for the kill.
