The U.S. Mint has its headquarters in Washington D.C., but also operates four production mints and a bullion depository around the country. The various U.S. Mint facilities are in Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, West Point and Fort Knox, the latter being the gold bullion depository.
The oldest U.S. Mint facility is in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and began operations in 1972. As of 2015, this location is tasked with the sculpting-engraving of various U.S. coins and the production of all coin denominations for general use. While the Fort Knox location is the official bullion storage of U.S. gold, gold, silver and platinum bullion are also stored in other Mint locations, such as West Point and Denver.
