Methionine is the amino acid that uses the abbreviation "met." The human body uses methionine to produce protein molecules that are then used to build muscle and organ tissues.
Methionine can be found in egg whites, fish and poultry. An adult needs to consume roughly 46 milligrams of methionine daily. Medicinally, it prevents liver damage, especially damage caused by an overdose of acetaminophen. Methionine helps the kidneys to clear any residual antibiotics from the blood. Excess antibiotics can cause kidney stones. Having too little methionine in the body can increase the symptoms of depression and allow a buildup of toxins in the blood.
