According to the Schwartzentruber Amish Ordinance Letter, Amish women are not permitted to shave their legs or underarms. Amish ordinances also forbid women from cutting their hair.Among other Amish customs, women are to wear only dark colored dresses with either black or dark blue stockings and small-heeled black shoes.
Similar rules for clothing and grooming exist for Amish men, including the requirement that their hair be cut straight and that it should cover the ears. Amish men also cannot use any form of deodorant or shaving lotion. Men's hats are also regulated; they wear straw hats during the summer and black felt hats during the winter.
