What animals live in the bathypelagic zone?

Animals that live in the bathypelagic zone include mollusks, jellyfish and crustaceans as well as certain species of hardy fish. Most animals who can reside at these depths are scavengers, meaning they feed on detritus, and many are bioluminescent.

The bathypelagic zone extends to a depth of about 3,300 feet to 13,000 feet in the open ocean. Parasitic fish are often found at this depth and several species of jellyfish make their home here. Large whales, such as sperm whales, frequently dive to this depth in search of prey. The lack of sunlight in the bathypelagic zone prevents plants from growing here, so none of the animals found in this zone are herbivores.
