Powdered turmeric root is traditionally administered as a stimulant and carminative in doses of 0.5 to 3.0 grams per day, according to Drugs.com. While higher doses have been administered in treating ulcers, excess tumeric may adversely effect the gastrointestinal system of some patients.
A common spice in mustard and curry powders, tumeric is the focus of ongoing clinical trials gauging its effectiveness in treating certain cancers, Huntington's disease, colitis and Alzheimer's disease. Patients taking the proper dosage of turmeric have experienced very few side effects; rare cases of contact dermatitis and anaphylaxis have been reported among those exceeding the recommended amount.
