Nineteen of the 20 species of armadillo are native to Latin America, with the other species, the nine-banded armadillo, being native to the United States. Armadillos are considered a threatened species as of 2014.
An armadillo most closely resembles an opossum with a shell. Armadillos generally live between 12 and 15 years in captivity, but this can be shorter in the wild as deaths may occur from natural predators as well as humans. Armadillos are common road kill in rural areas. The different species range in color and size, with some armadillos growing as large as 59 inches long or as small as 5 inches long.
