Ernest Lawrence Thayer wrote the poem "Casey at the Bat." First published in the San Francisco Examiner June 3, 1888, it tells the story of a baseball player named Casey who strikes out in the last inning of the game, thus losing the game for the rest of his team.
New York singer and monologist William De Wolf Hopper recited "Casey at the Bat" on stage an estimated 10,000 times during his career.
Born in 1863, Ernest Lawrence Thayer became a journalist for the San Francisco Examiner when his colleague William Randolph Hearst took over as editor. He contributed ballads to the Sunday editions of the newspaper in addition to writing news stories.
