What is the average age horses live to?

The average lifespan of a horse is currently 25 to 33 years. The average horse lifespan has been steadily increasing as advances in care and medicine keep them healthy longer. Many horses today live healthy lives into their 30s, as of 2014.

The oldest horse on record lived for 52 years. Ponies and small horses such as Arabians tend to live the longest. The large draft breeds tend to not live quite as long. Attention to dental and hoof care, and improved feeding practices, are credited with the increased longevity of horses. The major causes of death of horses are colic, laminitis, accidents and old age. Poor feeding practices are major contributors to cases of colic and laminitis.
