The average alcohol content of beer by volume is between 4 and 6 percent. Low-alcohol beers such may have 0.5 to 2 percent alcohol by volume, while stronger beers may have up to 12 percent.
Alcohol by volume is calculated by the formula ABV = (Starting Specific Gravity - Final Specific Gravity) times .736. Wine has more alcohol by volume than beer, with an average of 12 percent per 4-ounce serving. Spirits have a much higher alcohol by volume, with an average of 40 percent per 1.5-ounce serving. Grain alcohol is much higher, at 85 to 95 percent alcohol by volume.
