The Arab Republic of Egypt receives an average of 2 inches of rain a year. The amount of rain varies by region: the area along the Mediterranean Sea gets about 8 inches a year, while in the rest of the country, rain is very scarce.
Egypt has three rainfall belts:
- The Mediterranean coastal belt receives about 8 inches annually, almost all in the winter months. It rarely rains during the summer.
- Middle Egypt experiences rainfall in the range of 3/4 inches to 6 inches a year with the most near the Mediterranean. Rainfall gradually decreases moving inland from the coast.
- The area of Egypt bordering on Sudan and southern Libya is almost rainless. Some years, it doesn't rain at all.
