Northern Chile, home to the Atacama Desert, typically receives no rain in July, with an average yearly rainfall total of 0.03 inches. There are some parts of northern Chile, such as the city of Calama, that have never recorded rain in any amount.

Northern Chile is considered the world's driest place; between October 1903 and January 1918, no rain fell there. This harsh climate, combined with its high elevation, has rendered the Atacama Desert the driest on earth and among the world's most desolate places.

The Altiplano Plateau, also in northern Chile, does see some rain, with most of it falling in January and February.
